Meeting: Monday, March 4th NOTES Empty Meeting: Monday, March 4th NOTES

Great meeting last night, as several members braved the cold to come and share, learn from each other and eat to excess. Many other members were out working (Yay!), as reality television continues to employ more and more of our group on short-term gigs.

    - Daniel Jacobs showed powerful edits from his recent embed in Turkey. Exciting ethnographic work. He is returning to Turkey this Sunday for another embed with the last indigenous sheepherding family as they move to the city. We discussed his use of 60d and EX-1; dealing with high-contrast lighting inside tents on the Turkish Steppe; shooting as flat as possible to preserve highlights and un-crushed blacks, especially with Canon DSLRs; Picture Profiles from Macie and Philip Bloom; and several members shared strategies for dealing with locals overseas in urban environments.

    - Rich Fomo brought in his tricked-out FS-100/Nikon/Tamron/follow-focus-rails rig (sweet) and demonstrated his adoption of the Arca-Swiss mounting system to three situations: On tripod, on shoulder brace and handheld.

    - Brian Galford showed a completed sports highlights showcase reel for his client, an exclusive private school. We discussed his usage of Nikon setup with post in Final Cut Pro to "capture the decisive moment" when filming lacrosse, football, cross country and other sports.

    - Chuck Rosina showed original advocacy group artwork about rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy. Inspiring.

    - Jonathan Amerikaner proposed that we transition from this email system of intra-group communication to a web forum format. He's promised to do some research and get back to us with a recommended forum software. He also showed a brief documentary on the career of James Wong Howe, ASC, two-time oscar winner and cinematography pioneer, whose career began in 1915 (!) and stretched into the 1970's.

    - Diane Andronica showed us a YouTube video from New York's "Improv Everywhere" theater troupe about subway panhandlers. Hilarious. Diane, please share the link.

    - Brian Henderson waited until everyone else left, and then showed Roberto two projects: A profile piece on the famed Yin Sisters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwXSWsC60lY (child painting prodigies) he shot as part of a multicamera team on Canon 5dMkII and EX1's -- and we had a lengthy discussion about lighting, lenses, etc. And a gorgeous 30-minute short, sensitive narrative film shot on location in Haiti. Panasonic AF100. It looks GREAT and I wish everyone had seen both of these. The Haiti film dealt with issues of tropical latitude -- bright, bright sun, white buildings, beautiful dark-skinned people. Challenging for any cinematographer. Brian did sound on this project, and discussed in detail the various methods he used.

    - We had several fruitful discussions, including renewed interest in guest speakers and presentations from allied artists in non-technical fields; the possibility of doing occasional larger evenings and inviting the NE film community, etc.

    - And, oh yes...we CHOWED DOWN on vegetarian pasta salad; sushi; chicken nuggets; fresh popped olive oil popcorn, vegan salad with goat cheese; assorted belgian chocolates for dessert; and other yummy stuff.
